What Is A Horse Longshot

By: Richard Bleuze

What is a horse longshot?

In horse racing, an underdog horse is considered a longshot.  The horse longshot bet is not highly regarded because the perceived chance of winning with a longshot is decidedly low.  However, betting on a longshot can be very profitable for the horse bettor.  If you win, the payout is likely to be very large, as such bets are not expected to pay off.  However, I always suggest adding a horse longshot in your exotic bets.

Betting on a horse longshot can be a bit like spinning a roulette wheel and hoping to win.  In general, the odds are stacked against you.  However, you never know what might happen in a horse race.  On the other hand, there are some horse bettors who spend their time researching horse longshots in a race.  In general, these horse bettors use a variety of methods to try to determine which horse longshots have the best chances of paying off.

For those with a little extra money to wager, making a bet on a horse longshot may not be such a bad idea.  By spending just a few dollars, it is possible to rake in lots of dollars in horse betting profits.  However, I do not recommend plunking down large sums of money on a horse longshot since it could prove a financial disaster.  Just remember, if you lose, you will lose big.  A horse longshot is just that - a longshot to win the horse race!

You will find that there are many books, magazines, and websites that offer tips for betting and winning on horse longshots.  I found that the best book on betting horse longshots is "Betting Small - Winning Big" .  Although, geared to the UK horse betting market, it still applies to both horse betting in the U.S. and Australia.  The writer of this book is known as the "Longshot King".  In fact, for those of you even remotely familiar with horseracing in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, you have probably figured out that the "Longshot King" is none other than Brian Blackwell – the editor of Australia’s favorite racing magazine, Practical Punting Monthly, as well as the head of Practical Punting Daily, that nation’s leading daily tipping site.  Though it may come as a surprise to novice horse bettors, many professional horse bettors have developed strategies for making horse longshot bets.  There is no guarantee that such a horse longshot strategy will work for you, but employing one may be better than trying to place bets with no clear direction.

No matter what strategy you learn or develop for betting on horse longshots, keep in mind that there is real risk involved.  There is real money to be lost when longshots do not win, and they are not very likely to win.  Still, many bet on them, considering the thrill, when they do win since it is well worth the risk.  Especially, in your exotic bets, as mentioned.
