What Is A Route Race In Horse Racing

By: Richard Bleuze

I get asked several times to define what a route race is in horse racing.  This is not an article, but just information that the industry defines.

It is a well excepted fact in this country that anything at a mile or over regardless of turns in a horse race is called a route race that is why in condition books when assigning weights there is all ways the clause "at a mile or over" as to not penalize horses in route races for wins going short.
